The Prince Albert Gallery is in Seven Arches, the gracious Victorian building opposite the Museum.  This unique gallery, was conceived some years ago by local artists who needed a venue to show their work.  During a meeting held early in 2002, six people elected to create the space and run the gallery and on 10 May of that year the first exhibition was opened. Since then there have been a variety of exhibitions by artists well known both locally and country-wide, such as Alf Gundersen, David Goldblatt, Sally Arnold, Christine Thomas, Anne Kerr and her mother Erica Berry, installation artist Jo O'Connor, Richard John Forbes, and painter, Ben Coutouvidis.

PArt

Prince Albert Art Festival

was held from 28 September - 1 October 2012

To mark the town’s 250th birthday celebration and the Prince Albert Gallery’s tenth anniversary, more than 30 of South Africa’s most renowned visual artists  participated in the village’s first art festival.

The festival interrogated the theme of The Vulnerable Landscape. Artists explored all aspects of landscape: interiors, the mind, urban renewal and destruction, the veld and closer to home, the beautiful and vast landscapes of the Karoo.

In addition to the Gallery, housed in the historic Seven Arches building, other venues around the architecturally acclaimed village were in use. “We wanted to include as much of the town as possible,” said Gallery owner Brent Phillips-White. “We offered lectures and workshops as well as the exhibitions in some of these venues.”

Art lovers discovered work by painters, photographers, ceramicists, print-makers, sculptors and land artists at the festival.

Prince Albert Gallery co-director, Mary Anne Botha explained: “The arid Karoo is vulnerable to climate change and human intrusion. Water for food and settlement is scarce. Fossil water held in deep aquifers is irreplaceable.

New work was on display by David Goldblatt, William Kentridge, Hylton Nel and Hermann Niebuhr. Other artists exhibiting included Standard Bank Artist of the Year 2012 Mikhael Subotzky, internationally celebrated Philip W. Badenhorst and land artist Strijdom van der Merwe. (A full list of the artists participating is below).

An exhibition was curated featuring Karoo artists’ response to the threat of fracking. Workshops were offered by photographer Louis Botha and reduction woodblock printmaker Joshua Miles. Prominent paleontologist Judy Maguire and artist JP Meyer offered lectures in the evenings. The town’s recreational cooking school, African Relish, had a special weekend cooking course and other restaurants around the village hosted dinners with artists.

We hoped the gallery could provide an opportunity for people to enjoy and appreciate a variety of art and also encourage those with creative abilities to show their work. The July 2003 exhibition `30x40?` (which describes the size of the canvas people used) achieved this aim. All works were unsigned hence the question mark in the title.

Held to commemorate our first anniversary the show was a massive success with over 40 contributors and 29 paintings that sold. Subsequent `30x40?`exhibitions have proved equally popular and more artists and patrons join the fun of the silent auction at the opening of the exhibition each year.

Of the original group of six running the gallery, one remains, Brent Phillips-White. A new member, Mary Anne Botha has joined.

The spirit and enthusiasm of the founding members, Kevin Hough, Trudy Brain, JP Meyer, Sheila Coutouvidis and Stephen Allwright remain with us and they continue to contribute their art and interest.
