a destination in its own right

Situated on a hill overlooking Prince Albert,

in an expansive landscape of aloes

and other interesting succulents,

Aloe Cottage welcomes nature lovers and artists.

Private, with its own drive-in entrance & covered parking, this en-suite self-contained cottage offers two air-conditioned suites and is well equipped for  lengthy stays.

The spacious cottage is tastefully furnished, with stunning views framed in every window. Relax in the comfortable lounge with TV, or on either of the two large patios. Braai facilities (a Weber) are provided, including charcoal and firelighters.

The large garden, with strategically placed seating, is ideal for moments of quiet reflection.

Botanical and landscape artists will find much to inspire their work.

We are within walking distance of the village and one is perfectly safe wandering around Prince Albert during the day or in the evening.

The bedroom pictured below is en-suite to a shower room, the other has extra-length twin beds and air-conditioning. Linen, towels, toiletries and a hair-dryer are provided.  Electric blankets and down duvets ensure snug nights even in the depths of a Karoo winter.

Sometimes we have two guests who are sharing a holiday, but who require separate suites, please let us know if this is the case so that we can prepare both suites.

The Aloe Cottage gourmet kitchen is well equipped for extended stays, we provide a double door fridge/freezer,  four plate stove, dish washer, best quality stainless steel saucepans, carefully selected kitchen utensils, food processor, washing machine, iron and ironing board.

It would seem that guests choosing the self catering option want to do just that – self cater.

Others again, would prefer to have a few basics provided. You will find breakfast provisions of fruit/juice, muesli and cereal, rusks, tea, coffee, milk and sugar.

There is a selection of handy condiments on the shelf for your use – Olive oil, Balsamic Vinegar, Tomato sauce, Worcester sauce, Sunflower oil, Salt, Pepper and a few spices.

Karoo and full English breakfasts are available at a number of restaurants and coffee shops in the village. Learn more about them from our Welcome File.

You may enjoy a stroll on our unique 8 acre Rondavel property, where much of the land has been left undisturbed, reflecting the true wealth of Karoo flora. Many of these plants have been labelled to add to your enjoyment. We have identified more than 50 aloe varieties which we are cataloguing.

Watching the breath-taking sunrises and sunsets from Aloe Cottage is an experience you will never forget. You will find birding and gardening magazines and books in the cottage, as well as a fact file on local activities and places of interest. We offer laundry, e-mail, fax and restaurant booking services.

Aloe Cottage offers the nature lover a unique and unforgettable experience in home-from-home comfort.

The Aloe striata   (coral aloe, blou-aalwyn) flourishes on our property and so we have chosen it as our logo - here is some information about the plant

The stem is often procumbent, about 1m long and covered with old persistent leaves. New plants may appear along this stem which carries the main rosette at the top. The broad glaucous leaves are spineless and their colour varies according to area and climate from blue-green to yellow-green, while in the dry karroid hills near Calitzdorp, where they are found in large numbers, they turn a delightful soft pink, edged with red. The inflorescence is a branched and rebranched round panicle with 1 – 3 stems of about 1 m growing from each plant. It occurs on rocky hillsides in the drier areas of the southern and eastern Cape. Flowers July to October.
