The Leeu Gamka Nursery and Farm stall is situated 75km from Beaufort West and 125 km from Laingsburg on the N1 and is the only succulent nursery (vetplant kwekery) situated on the N1.  Prince Albert lies just 60 km from Leeu Gamka.

This unique project started on the Dutch Reformed Church Grounds in 1998 with just 200 indigenous trees.  Soon there was a need for other plants such as shrubs and fruit trees, especially olive trees.  Today the nursery hosts indigenous and exotic trees, fruit trees, indigenous and exotic shrubs, conifers, grasses, ground covers, herbs, creepers, perennials, aloes and succulents.

The biggest challenge for a nursery at Leeu Gamka is the “brakwater” (under ground water with a high salt content).  Our plants are well adapted to the harsh Karoo climate.

One of our main aims is to provide affordable indigenous plants to the public and to encourage water-wise gardens.  Water is becoming scarcer and we must find ways to preserve this precious resource.  Succulents and aloes are a good choice if you want to make a water-wise garden.  The Nursery has 41 different aloe species.  We are the only nursery in the country that sells the Aloe chlorantha.  This aloe is found in a small region in the Fraserburg district.

We serve light refreshments on our farm stall verandah.  We sell a selection of local produce such as olives, homemade preserves, dried fruit and crafts and also stock a selection of Christian books.

Pop into the Leeu Gamka Nursery and Farmstall on your next trip along the N1.

 Leeu-Gamka's art venue

Leeu-Gamka Nursery and Farm stall hosts an art venue in the historical Dutch Reformed Church Hall.  This hall was built in the Cape-Gothic style and was completed by 1922.  This landmark is clearly visible from the N1 between Beaufort-West and Laingsburg.  The Leeu-Gamka Nursery and Farm stall invites all art lovers to experience true Karoo art. Our first exhibition is by Lidi van Schalkwyk

Hope rising from the ashes

Jeremia was sent to the house of the potter to realise God can make failed lives new.  Lidi uses old rusty irons to create striking works of art.  She uses these items to show the world that one can make something beautiful with items that have been discarded as rubbish.  She combines this “rubbish” with clay to make a whole new picture, with Bible themes of hope.

Lidi is well known for her Kallaharees (also known at the clay trolls) and clay angels.  After Lidi and her family moved to Leeu-Gamka, she bid the Kallaharees goodbye and is now concentrating on her larger works.  She also makes clay pots with a very unusual texture.  These pots go strikingly well with a large variety of succulents.

January 2010

The Leeu-Gamka Nursery did a small garden at the Interpretative Centre at the Karoo National Park outside Beaufort-West.  There was even a tame Meerkat named Karools, who helped us with the gardening.  Do visit us and see a collection of succulents and other Karoo plants.

PLANT VAN DIE MAAND

Acacia nilotica subsp. kraussiana (Lekkerruikpeul/ Scented thorn)

Hou ons gerus ingedagte indien u weer ‘n funksie beplan.
